You can buy or sell Iraqi dinars (IQD) for cash at FonderX in New Westminster, a short SkyTrain ride from anywhere in Greater Vancouver. Walk in with Canadian dollars or dinars and valid government photo ID, and we exchange at the rate posted on our board that day.
Below we explain how our dinar rates work using today's real numbers, who usually needs IQD, what to bring, and why it pays to call ahead for larger amounts.
What the Iraqi dinar is and who needs it
The Iraqi dinar is the official currency of Iraq, and its code is IQD. One dinar is worth a small fraction of a Canadian dollar, so prices in Iraq are usually written in thousands of dinars. That is why our rate has so many decimal places.
Most of the people who come to us for dinars are:
- Families visiting relatives in Iraq, including the Kurdistan Region, who want some local cash on arrival.
- Travellers heading to Iraq for work or a family event.
- People coming back to Canada with leftover dinars they want to turn back into Canadian dollars.
- Customers who were given dinars as a gift and want to know what they are worth here.
Having some cash in hand when you land means you are not hunting for an exchange office after a long flight. How much you need depends on your plans, and many travellers bring some US dollars as well.
How our We Buy and We Sell rates work for IQD
Our board shows two prices for every currency, quoted in Canadian dollars per one unit of that currency.
- We Sell is what you pay us when you buy dinars.
- We Buy is what we pay you when you sell dinars to us.
Here are our live rates as of Wednesday, October 7, 2026 at 9:36 AM Pacific, with a few worked examples:
| Iraqi dinars (IQD) | You buy IQD from us (We Sell 0.0013000) | You sell IQD to us (We Buy 0.0010300) |
|---|---|---|
| 100,000 IQD | $130.00 CAD | $103.00 CAD |
| 250,000 IQD | $325.00 CAD | $257.50 CAD |
| 500,000 IQD | $650.00 CAD | $515.00 CAD |
| 1,000,000 IQD | $1,300.00 CAD | $1,030.00 CAD |
To work out your own number, multiply the amount of dinars by the rate. For example, 100,000 dinars times 0.0013000 is 130 Canadian dollars to buy, and 100,000 times 0.0010300 is 103 Canadian dollars when you sell.
Rates change through the day, so these numbers are a snapshot only. Check today's rates before you come in, and the rate on our board when you arrive is the one you get.
Selling dinars back: what to expect
If you have dinars left over from a trip, bringing them in soon after you get home is the simple option. Cash sitting in a drawer is easy to forget, and the value in Canadian dollars can move either way while it waits.
Notes in good condition are the easiest to exchange. If your notes are badly torn, marked, or very worn, bring them in and we will tell you honestly whether we can accept them.
We do not make predictions about where the dinar is heading. You may see claims online about a coming "revaluation" of the dinar. We cannot tell you whether any currency will rise or fall, and we suggest treating such claims with care. We simply buy and sell dinars at the posted rate for people who need them.
What to bring to the counter
Exchanging at FonderX is quick when you come prepared:
- Valid government photo ID. This is required for every exchange. As a FINTRAC-registered money services business (MSB registration N300001076), we follow Canadian identification and record-keeping rules.
- Cash only. We do not accept cards, e-transfers or cheques. Bring Canadian dollars to buy dinars, or your dinars to sell.
- An idea of how much you need. Knowing your amount in dinars or in Canadian dollars helps us count it out faster.
If you are a paramedic, firefighter, police officer, 911 dispatcher, nurse, ER doctor or teacher, bring your work ID and ask about our Frontline Heroes Rate.
Call ahead for larger amounts
Iraqi dinars are less common than US dollars or euros, so the amount we have on hand can vary. If you plan to buy or sell a larger amount, please call us first at (778) 759-0400.
A quick call lets us confirm we have enough dinars ready, tell you the current rate, and keep your visit short. It also saves you a wasted trip from Surrey, Coquitlam or Burnaby if stock is low that day. You can find our full details on the contact and hours page.
