If you are flying from Vancouver to Delhi, Mumbai or Punjab, it makes sense to land with some Indian rupees (INR) already in your wallet. A modest amount of cash covers the first taxi, snacks, small shops and tips before you find an ATM or settle in with family. At FonderX in New Westminster you can buy rupees in cash before your trip, at a rate you can see on our board.

This guide covers why cash still helps in India, roughly how much to bring for a week, which notes are most useful, and how buying INR at FonderX works.

Why bring Indian rupees in cash

Many people in Indian cities pay with phone apps, but those usually need an Indian bank account and phone number, so they are not always practical for visitors. Cash still works almost everywhere: street food, auto-rickshaws, local markets, temple donations and small shops in Punjab villages or old Delhi lanes.

Landing with rupees also means you do not have to hunt for an ATM after a long flight. If you are visiting family, cash makes it easy to chip in for groceries, gifts or a shared taxi without anyone covering for you.

Your Canadian card may still work at hotels, malls and larger restaurants. Think of cash as the backup that always works, not the only way to pay.

How much INR to bring for a week

There is no single right number, because a week staying with relatives in Ludhiana looks very different from a week of hotels in Mumbai. For everyday spending (local transport, meals out, snacks, small shopping and tips), many travellers find ₹15,000 to ₹20,000 per person is a comfortable starting point for a week. Hotels and big purchases you plan to put on a card are extra.

Here is what common amounts cost at FonderX, using our We Sell rate for INR of 0.01580 CAD per rupee, as of Tuesday October 27, 2026 at 9:45 AM Pacific. Rates change through the day, so check today's rates before you come in.

Rupees you buyCost in CAD
₹5,000$79.00
₹10,000$158.00
₹15,000$237.00
₹20,000$316.00

Worked example: you want ₹20,000 for a week in Delhi. That is 20,000 × 0.01580 = $316.00 CAD at the rate above. If you come home with ₹5,000 left over, we buy INR back at our We Buy rate of 0.01460, so you would get 5,000 × 0.01460 = $73.00 CAD at that same time.

One important limit: India restricts how much Indian currency a traveller can bring into the country. The figure usually cited is ₹25,000 per person, but rules can change, so confirm the current limit with official Indian government or Reserve Bank of India sources before you fly. Keeping your cash within the limit avoids trouble at customs.

Small notes vs large notes

Indian banknotes in common use include ₹10, ₹20, ₹50, ₹100, ₹200 and ₹500. The ₹500 is great for paying a hotel bill or a bigger restaurant tab, but drivers and small vendors may not have change for it.

A practical mix for a week:

  • Some ₹500 notes for larger payments.
  • A good stack of ₹100 and ₹200 notes for rickshaws, chai, snacks and small purchases.
  • A few smaller notes for tips and very small items.

When you order rupees at FonderX, tell us what mix you would like. We will do our best with the notes we have on hand; calling ahead helps for larger amounts.

Cash habits and travel tips for India

Keep a small "day wallet" with the cash you expect to spend that day, and leave the rest in your bag or with your host. Count your change before you walk away from a counter, and keep your notes flat and in good condition, since torn or heavily marked notes may be refused.

Small tips are common for things like hotel porters and drivers, which is another reason smaller notes are handy. If you are unsure what is normal, ask your family or hotel staff once you arrive.

Finally, carry a card as a backup and tell your bank you are travelling, so a foreign charge does not get your card blocked.

Buying rupees at FonderX before your trip

Buying INR here is simple. Walk in with Canadian cash and valid government photo ID, tell us how many rupees you need, and we will count them out with you at the counter. We are cash only, so there are no cards, e-transfers or cheques.

If you work as a nurse, paramedic, firefighter, police officer, 911 dispatcher, ER doctor or teacher, ask about our Frontline Heroes Rate and bring your work ID. For larger amounts, it is a good idea to phone ahead through our contact and hours page so we can have your rupees ready.

Back from India with leftover rupees? Bring them in and we will buy them back in cash.
