Whether you buy foreign cash at the airport, at your bank or at a local exchange, the question that matters is the same: how many Canadian dollars will this cost me in total? Compare the exchange rate, any fees, and whether the cash is actually available when you need it. A few minutes of checking before you go can make a real difference on a larger amount.
The three options at a glance
Each option has its own strengths. The right choice depends on how much you are exchanging, how much time you have and how much you value convenience.
- Airport exchange counters are convenient when you are already on your way. You can pick up cash right before you fly, but there is little time to shop around if the price is not what you expected.
- Your bank is familiar, and you may already have an account there. Some branches keep only a few major currencies on hand, so less common ones may need to be ordered ahead. Ask your branch how it works and what it charges.
- A local currency exchange like FonderX focuses on foreign cash. Rates are posted openly so you can check them before you leave home, and many currencies can be bought on a walk-in basis.
We are not going to tell you what other providers charge, because rates and fees change and differ by location. What we can do is show you what to ask, so you can compare any two quotes fairly.
What to compare before you go
1. The exchange rate. In Canada, rates are usually shown as Canadian dollars per one unit of foreign currency. If you are buying, look at the rate you pay (on our board that is the "We Sell" column). A lower number means you pay less CAD for each unit.
2. Fees and commissions. Some providers add a flat service fee or a percentage on top of the rate. Others build everything into the rate. Neither is wrong, but you can only compare them by looking at the final number.
3. The total in CAD. This is the one number that settles it. Ask: "If I want 500 euros, what is my total in Canadian dollars, all in?" Get that same answer from each place and compare.
4. The spread. The spread is the gap between what a provider charges to sell you a currency and what it pays to buy it back. It matters if you expect leftover cash, because you will sell it back at the lower "We Buy" rate.
5. Availability and denominations. Ask whether the currency is in stock today. If you are heading somewhere where large notes are hard to break, ask for a mix of smaller bills.
6. Payment method and ID. Find out how you can pay and what ID you need before you go. At FonderX, it is cash only, and a valid government photo ID is required.
A worked example with today's FonderX rates
Here is what a few common travel amounts would cost at FonderX using our "We Sell" rates as of Friday October 23, 2026 at 9:55 AM Pacific. Rates change through the day, so always check today's rates before you come in.
| You want | Our We Sell rate (CAD per 1 unit) | Your total in CAD |
|---|---|---|
| 500 US dollars | 1.4145 | $707.25 |
| 500 euros | 1.6300 | $815.00 |
| 500 British pounds | 1.9086 | $954.30 |
| 5,000 Mexican pesos | 0.08800 | $440.00 |
| 50,000 Japanese yen | 0.0092140 | $460.70 |
The math is simple: amount of foreign currency multiplied by the rate. For example, 500 euros x 1.6300 = $815.00 CAD. When you get a quote elsewhere, do the same multiplication and add any fee they mention. Then you are comparing like with like.
The spread works the other way. If you came home with 100 US dollars and sold them back to us at our "We Buy" rate of 1.4141 at that same time, you would receive $141.41 CAD. On US dollars our buy and sell rates were only 0.0004 apart at that time. On other currencies the gap is wider, so it is worth checking both columns.
Tips for getting the most from your exchange
- Do not leave it to the last day. Exchanging a few days before your trip gives you time to compare and to visit during business hours.
- Bring the right amount of CAD cash. If a provider is cash only, as we are, bring enough to cover the total.
- Count your money at the counter. Any good exchange will count it out in front of you.
- Keep some local cash and a card. Many travellers carry some cash for taxis, tips and small shops, and use a card for larger purchases.
- Ask about special rates. Some providers offer better rates to certain customers. At FonderX, frontline workers can ask about our Frontline Heroes Rate with valid work ID.
Selling leftover currency when you get back
Coming home with leftover euros, pesos or dollars is common. Rather than letting the notes sit in a drawer, you can sell them back for Canadian dollars. We buy about 40 world currencies in cash, so most common travel leftovers can be exchanged. Check the "We Buy" column on today's rates to see what you would receive.

Frequently asked questions
Is it better to exchange currency before travelling or at the airport?
Exchanging before you travel gives you time to compare rates and fees and get the denominations you want. At the airport you have less time to compare, so check the total in Canadian dollars before you agree.
How do I compare exchange rates between two places?
Ask each provider for the total cost in Canadian dollars for the same amount of foreign currency, including any fees. The lower total is the better deal.
What does "no commission" mean at a currency exchange?
It means there is no separate fee added on top. The provider's cost is built into the exchange rate, so you still need to compare the final total.
What do I need to bring to exchange currency at FonderX?
Bring cash, since FonderX is cash only, and a valid government photo ID. We are open Monday to Friday, 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM.
