What the US dollar is and who needs it
The US dollar (USD) is the currency of the United States. It is also widely accepted or used in a number of other places, so many travellers carry some even when the US is not their final stop.
In Greater Vancouver, the people who usually ask us for US dollars include:
- Day trippers and weekend travellers heading across the border to Washington State.
- Families flying to US destinations for holidays, sports tournaments or visiting relatives.
- Students and workers spending time in the United States.
- Travellers going to places where US cash is commonly accepted alongside the local currency.
People also come to us to sell US dollars. That might be leftover cash from a trip, US bills received as a gift, or money brought home after working or studying south of the border.
How our We Buy and We Sell rates work for USD
Our rate board shows two numbers for every currency. They are always written as Canadian dollars per 1 unit of the foreign currency.
- We Sell is the price you pay us when you buy US dollars.
- We Buy is what we pay you when you sell US dollars to us.
The gap between the two numbers is how a currency exchange covers its costs. For USD on October 14, 2026 at 10:04 AM Pacific, that gap was 0.0277 CAD per US dollar. If you want a deeper walkthrough of how the board works, our earlier post on We Buy vs We Sell rates covers it in detail.
Here is what those rates look like for some common amounts:
| US dollars | You pay us (We Sell 1.4396) | We pay you (We Buy 1.4119) |
|---|---|---|
| $100 USD | $143.96 CAD | $141.19 CAD |
| $500 USD | $719.80 CAD | $705.95 CAD |
| $1,000 USD | $1,439.60 CAD | $1,411.90 CAD |
These figures are based on the rates as of Wednesday October 14, 2026 at 10:04 AM Pacific. The rate you get is the one on the board when you complete your exchange, so the numbers may be different by the time you visit. You can always see the current figures on today's rates.
Buying US dollars: a few practical tips
Buying your US cash before you leave means you are not hunting for an exchange after a long drive or flight. It also lets you see exactly what you are paying in Canadian dollars before the trip starts.
A few things that help:
- Think about how you will use it. Small purchases, tips, parking and vending machines are easier with smaller bills. Ask for a mix of denominations if that suits your plans.
- Count it before you leave. Take a moment at the counter to check the amount matches your receipt.
- Keep it split up. Many travellers keep some cash in a wallet and some in a separate, secure spot.
- Do not leave it to the last minute. If you need a larger amount, call ahead so we can confirm we have it ready.
If you work as a paramedic, firefighter, police officer, 911 dispatcher, nurse, ER doctor or teacher, ask about our Frontline Heroes Rate. Bring your work ID along with your government photo ID.
Selling US dollars back to us
Leftover US cash does not earn you anything sitting in a drawer. If you are not planning another trip soon, you can sell it back to us and walk out with Canadian dollars.
When you sell, we pay you at our We Buy rate for USD. Using the October 14, 2026 rate of 1.4119, $200 USD would come to $282.38 CAD. As always, the rate on the board at the time of your exchange is the one that applies.
Some people prefer to hold on to a small amount of US cash for their next trip across the border. That is a personal choice and depends on how often you travel.
