If you are flying from Vancouver to London, Edinburgh or anywhere else in the United Kingdom, it is worth landing with some British pounds (GBP) in cash. Cards are widely used in the UK, but a few hundred pounds in your wallet covers small purchases, tips, and the moments when a card reader is down or your bank flags a foreign charge. You can buy pounds in cash at FonderX in New Westminster before you leave.
As of Thursday October 15, 2026 at 9:49 AM Pacific, our sell rate for British pounds is 1.9147 CAD per pound. Rates change through the day, so check today's rates before you come in.
Why bring British pounds in cash
The UK is very card-friendly, especially in London. Still, cash is useful in a few situations:
- Small shops, market stalls and cafes, especially outside big city centres.
- Tips for hotel staff, tour guides or taxi drivers.
- A backup if your card is blocked, lost, or your bank holds a foreign transaction for review.
- Rural areas and smaller towns, including parts of Scotland, where you may not want to rely on one card.
Having pounds on arrival also means you can pay for a coffee, a snack or a transit top-up right away, without hunting for an ATM in the airport after a long flight.
How much GBP cash to bring for a week
There is no single right amount. It depends on how much you plan to pay by card, how many people are travelling, and how long you are staying. A common approach is to carry enough cash for day-to-day small spending and keep cards for hotels, trains and larger meals.
Here is a simple example using our sell rate of 1.9147 CAD per pound, as of Thursday October 15, 2026 at 9:49 AM Pacific:
| Pounds you buy | Cost in CAD at 1.9147 |
|---|---|
| £200 | 382.94 |
| £300 | 574.41 |
| £400 | 765.88 |
| £500 | 957.35 |
Worked example: a couple spending a week in London who plan to pay hotels and train tickets by card might bring £400 in cash for markets, cafes, tips and small purchases. At 1.9147, that is 400 x 1.9147 = 765.88 CAD. Rates move through the day, so the exact amount will depend on the rate when you visit.
If you come home with leftover pounds, you can sell them back to us. Our buy rate at the same time was 1.8560 CAD per pound, so £50 left over would come to 92.80 CAD. Keeping your cash amount realistic means less to convert back.
Small bills or large bills?
British banknotes come in £5, £10, £20 and £50. For travel, smaller notes are usually more practical:
- £5 and £10 notes are handy for coffee, snacks, transit and tips.
- £20 notes are the everyday workhorse for meals and shopping.
- £50 notes are the least convenient, since some small shops may not like breaking them.
When you buy your pounds, tell us how you would like the money split and we will do our best with the notes we have on hand. The UK also uses £1 and £2 coins, which you will pick up as change.
A quick note for Scotland: Scottish banks issue their own pound notes. They are the same currency as pounds from the Bank of England, so you can spend them during your trip.
Tipping and cash habits in the UK
Tipping in the UK is generally more modest than in Canada. Many restaurants add a service charge to the bill, so check before adding anything extra. In pubs, you usually order and pay at the bar, and tipping is not expected for a round of drinks.
For taxis, hotel porters and tour guides, a small cash tip is a nice gesture if you were happy with the service. This is where having a few £5 notes and some coins in your pocket helps.
